BASIC DESCRIPTION OF LEARN TO SKATE CLASSES

  • All Children Must Be Able To Do Each Of The Elements Listed In His Or Her Level To Pass And Be Promoted To The Next Level
  • ALL CLASSES ARE TAUGHT TO I.S.I. STANDARDS

Tiny Tot

TINY TOT LEVEL 1
Student will learn to use, with confidence, some of the basic skills of skating. Student is taught falling down & getting up, marching in place & across the ice, two foot glides, forward swizzle in place & moving, backward wiggles, tea-pot dips and hopping in place.         

A basic beginner class for ages 4 & 5.

TINY TOT LEVEL 2
This is a slightly more advanced class and requires completion of Tiny Tot Level 1. Student will be refreshed on two foot glides and introduced to forward skating, forward swizzles (6 in a row), backward wiggles, backward swizzles (6 in a row), one foot glides on each foot (held at least 3 sec), begin snow plow stops & hops while moving.

Pre-Alpha

PRE-ALPHA LEVEL 1
Student will learn to use, with confidence, some of the basic skills of skating. Student is taught forward skating across ice, two foot glides, tea pot dips, forward swizzles (6 in a row), backward wiggles, backward swizzles (6 in a row), one foot glides on each foot (held at least 3 sec) and the beginning of snow plow stops. A basic beginner class for ages 6, 7 & 8.

PRE-ALPHA LEVEL 2
This is a slightly more advanced class and requires completion of the Pre-Alpha Level 1. Student will be forward skating across ice with speed, along with performing two foot glides, forward swizzles (10 in a row), backward wiggles, backward swizzles (10 in a row), snow plow stops (must stop completely) & one foot glide on each foot (held from one red dot to another).

 

*Children wishing to join Learn To Play must complete both Pre-Alpha 1 and Pre-Alpha 2 and pass evaluation.

OLDER PRE-ALPHA

This is a faster paced class for students aged 9 thru 13 who are progressing into the pre-alpha level. In addition to covering the same elements as Pre-Alpha 1 & 2 classes, the basic skills of Alpha are introduced. This includes, two foot glides, forward swizzles, backward wiggles, backward swizzles, snow plow stops (must stop completely) & one foot glides on each foot. This is a beginner class for children ages 9 thru 13.

ALPHA

Student will learn to use, with confidence, some of the advanced skills of skating. Student is taught the proper techniques of forward stroking, review of snow plow stops and instruction on forward crossovers (right over left & left over right).

BETA

Student will learn to use, with confidence, some of the advanced skills of skating. Student is taught backward stroking, T-stops using both feet and backward crossovers (right over left & left over right).

GAMMA

Student will learn to use, with confidence, some of the advanced skills of skating. Student is taught forward outside 3turns (right & left foot), Mohawks (right & left foot) and hockey stops.

DELTA

Student is introduced to bunny hop, lunge, forward inside & outside edges (right & left foot), forward inside 3turns (right & left foot). Optional: shoot the duck.

Freestyle

FREESTYLE – 1
Student is taught waltz jump, two foot spin, forward inside pivot, backward inside & outside edges (right & left foot), half flip jump and forward spiral.

FREESTYLE – 2
The student will be instructed on the ballet jump, half toe walley jump, half lutz jump, one foot spin, forward spirals on edges & footwork.

FREESTYLE – 3
Introduction to backward pivot, salchow jump, toe loop jump, backward spiral, scratch spin (5 rev) & footwork.

FREESTYLE – 4
Introduction to sit spin (6 rev), half loop jump, loop jump, flip jump, backward spiral (one on each foot) & footwork.

FREESTYLE – 5
Introduction to lutz jump, axel jump, camel spin (6 rev), back scratch spin (9 rev), combination spin (3 different positions) & footwork.

FREESTYLE – 6
Introduction to split jump, falling leaf, jump combination (waltz, half loop, flip), double salchow, lay back spin & back sit spin.
